Your Local Guide To Back to School Shopping

As summer comes to an end and the start of a new school year approaches, it's time to start thinking about back to school shopping. Instead of heading to big box stores or online retailers, why not consider supporting your local businesses this year? Not only will you find unique and high-quality items, but you'll also be investing in your community and helping small businesses thrive.

If your kid is in need of a new spot to stash their papers where they'll never see the light of day again, Mass Bay Co. in Hyannis offers a fantastic array of backpacks and messenger bags. Sativa has you covered for a new lunch box (even if it’s usually just full of snacks). And for those essential notebooks, pens, and planners (because we all start off trying to stay organized), be sure to check out the charming Adorn Cape Cod store in Orleans, Wish Gift Co. and Titcomb’s Book Shop in Sandwich, or Osterville Mercantile in Osterville (they have great art supplies too!),

For some fresh new clothes for the younger kids and maybe a pair of shoes that didn’t get utterly destroyed this summer, check out Caline for Kids in Falmouth, Pocket Full of Posies in Osterville, or Fox + Kit in Mashpee for some fabulous finds! Trendy Tots in Falmouth even has some preloved styles. You can discover some unique, affordable finds for older kids at RippedIt Vintage in Orleans, ARTichoke in Eastham or Day Off in Mashpee to help them with their signature style. Thrift shops like Wicked Thrift in South Yarmouth or 606 Thrift in Hyannis also offer a good range of styles and sizes.

With the Fall comes a new season of sports. While we mentally prepare ourselves for after school practice, weekend games, juggling dinner with homework, and practices with injury, we must also figure out where to get all this stuff (because we all know that the kids can’t seem to stay the same size for more than a season). Well, Butler Sporting Goods in Barnstable has the gear for every sport.

For the musicians in your brood, check out Charlie’s Music for all of your music instruments, accessories and equipment.

And last, we cannot forget the teacher supplies! Help them out by stopping by Friend’s Marketplace in Orleans or Snow’s Home & Gardens in Orleans to pick up things like clorox wipes, tissues, pencils, etc. If you’re not sure what else your kid’s new teacher needs, a gift card to a local restaurant or coffee shop usually does the trick.

All in all, back to school shopping doesn’t have to mean panic buying at a big box store. Keep in mind that our small businesses usually have back to school sales as well and you might just find that unique piece of school gear that helps your kid remember to bring it home every day….maybe.
