For decades small, local businesses have been the backbone of the United States economy.
According to the US Small Business Administration, there are nearly 30 million small businesses in the United States; all of these small businesses have a big impact through job creation, innovation, and local economic impact.
However, for the first time since the 1970s small business growth is happening at a much slower rate than ever before and in many places the rate of closure exceeds that of start-up. Many of those lost are retail businesses as consumers turn to shopping with online behemoths. As an organization that is devoted to supporting small businesses and understands the vital importance of local retail to our economy, this concerns us on a very deep level; and it should concern anyone who cares about keeping Cape Cod vibrant and unique.
We understand that the global economy is ever changing, but we also know that the Cape can’t depend on corporate America and off-Cape money to sustain the local economy.
Through launching our e-commerce site for all small businesses in our region, our aim is to keep at least a little bit of the online retail sales pie here on Cape Cod, rather than sending it right over the bridge. The platform will be open to any local business from Falmouth to Provincetown who wants to sign on to sell their products from household necessities to specialty gift items and everything in between, so that local consumers can conveniently shop local for their needs and wants 24 hours a day.
The economic outlook can, at times, seem daunting, but we happen to think the small businesses in our community provide a value that is worth fighting for. And we believe if we all come together, we can not only survive the changing economy, but thrive in it.
