Last month, we asked you to help us gather information on how much people are willing to pay for shipping on online orders in order to help us determine what we should charge when we launch our upcoming comprehensive e-commerce site. As much as we would like to be able to offer free shipping, unfortunately it is just too cost prohibitive to do so (unless someone has an in at USPS, UPS or Fed Ex and thinks they’d be willing to transport everything for free!?!).
The responses were very encouraging. Although most of the respondents are used to paying a minimal shipping fee, a majority of people saying they are willing to pay a shipping fee if they know their products are coming from a local business, and people were also willing to pay more for shipping if we partnered with a local nonprofit (more on that later!).
We met with our mighty web design team, Chris O’Brien and Rodrigo Passos of Dative to start mapping out what our site will look and feel like, and the features we will incorporate to make it top notch. Our collective overarching hope is to create a site that is not only convenient and easy to use, but also gives you that experience that makes shopping local unique. To that end, this month we’re hoping to get your qualitative input on the type of user experience you expect from a high-quality e-commerce site.
Specifically, we are hoping you can answer a few questions we have and then, of course, let us know what the most important things to you are about shopping local and alternatively about shopping online. You can answer these questions by commenting on this article, or by emailing us at email@example.com. All feedback is welcome!
- Thinking about when you shop online from browsing to checkout, what are the elements of your shopping experience that are essential to making it a positive one? For example, being able to create a profile for easy checkout.
- What feedback mechanisms do you think are necessary when shopping online? Live chat? The ability to write reviews?
- Considering business loyalty programs, you belong to, what are your favorite perks that you receive (extended return policy, insider information, special sales, etc.)?
