Shop Local Challenge

Almost a year ago I decided to explore what it would be like to try and spend a majority of my income at locally owned establishments. I didn’t think it would be that hard, as I was already a dedicated local shopper and diner. However, it was an interesting exercise in analyzing my spending habits from home décor and swimsuits, down to where I buy gas and car batteries.

I’ve also shared some hard truths about what it is like to own a business, some slip ups (ie shopping online) that I’ve had myself, and faced the reality that buying groceries from locally owned store was challenging not only from a selection perspective but also based on cost.

The overarching lesson of this evaluation was that by shopping smart consumers can localize their spending without trying too hard and without spending more. We just all need to be more connected to our community (online and IRL) in order to gain the knowledge needed to do so. It might take a little more effort in the beginning (as anything new does), but I promise the literal and figurative payoff is worth it.

Thus, in this next year, I’d like to do something a little bit different. I’d like to answer any of your questions about where to find products and services you might need, but don’t know where to start looking. Because I would love to provide you all with the information needed in order to help keep more of your spending money on Cape Cod.
