Last month we wrote about the great and growing need for foster homes on the Cape; this month we are sharing what one local business owner does in order to make children in the foster system feel special during the holiday season.
Every year Mark Corliss, the owner of Spilt Milk Art Gallery & Tattoo Studio, holds a raffle in December in order to raise money for individual gifts for between 50 and 100 kids (mostly teens) through the Department of Children and Family Services on Cape Cod. The tickets are $10 apiece and three winners are chosen for $100, $300 and $500 gift certificates for tattoos at Spilt Milk. Every dollar raised goes toward a specific gift that each child needs (usually clothing, or gift cards for food or gas) or wants.
Corliss himself says he “was very fortunate to come from an amazing family” who took in foster kids while he was growing up. He remembers the children arriving with all of their belongings in one trash bag, seemingly frightened and alone. “A child should not have to ever go through this,” he says, which is why he works so hard to put a smile on their face this time of year by being thoughtful and making them feel just like other kids who receive gifts around the holidays.
The drawing for the winners will take place on December 23, and you can buy tickets in the studio or you can call and they’ll enter you in the drawing over the phone.
