Family Fun Ideas, By the Dozen

As three ladies whose babies take the form of businesses we can’t seem to stop popping out, we rely on friends for the Cape’s best childrens’ activities.  With more and more of our friends venturing in the kiddie pool, we thought we would find out what the “still-cool” parents are doing for fun:

  • Catch a Cape Cod Baseball League game – the quintessential summer activity!
  • Grab a cooler and head to a northside beach. Corporation Beach has a playground and a snack shack; Paine’s Creek is great for splashing with little ones.
  • Recall your own youth by crabbing, kaying and jumping {at high tide!} from the boardwalk in Sandwich.
  • The weekly Wednesday night square dancing at Wellfleet Harbor is probably one of the most underated Cape summer activities around.  So magical!
  • The new Heritage Adventure Park is getting rave reviews. Plus, the Museum & Gardens has a carousel to keep smaller ones happy and everyone loves the classic cars.
  • Explore on a Barnstable Harbor Eco Tour … mom and dad can kick back and enjoy the sunshine and views.
  • Get into geocaching. It is basically like finding buried treasure!
  • Take a hike on the trails behind the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.
  • Visit the touch tanks at the Buzzards Bay Coalition, feed the seals at a free visit to the Woods Hole Aquarium and then reward yourself with a beer at Quick’s Hole while the kids much on a mini burrito or quesadilla.
  • Bond on the high seas with parent/child sailing classes at Pleasant Bay Community Boating.
  • Make memories at the Orleans Bowling Center, where the bowling is candlepin, the beer taps are many, and the food is delicious … really!
  • Create a family summer bucket list – and make sure it includes the Wellfleet Drive-in, a throwback experience everyone should have at some point.

kidsNeed just a little time for yourself? There are also some unusual but awesome camps that will buy you a few hours of quiet time: Alicia Mathewson and Kristen O’Toole offers two week-long Summer Kids Yoga + Music programs in Barnstable Village for kids ages 5-12. Payomet Circus Arts classes at Wellfleet Preservation Hall are perfect for your budding entertainer.  Cape native Erin Penner brings her LA-basedVibes365 activism-focused camps and workshops to get Cape Cod kids engaged in their local.
