So, last month we told you our news that at the end of this year we will be launching an ecommerce site where any local business can sign on to sell their products. The goal is to provide consumers with an opportunity to shop local 24 hours a day, to have a highly functional and appealing ecommerce platform with a large selection of goods that Cape Codders want and need, and to make it easy and convenient for them to invest in their local economy.
We have heard time and time again that Cape Cod consumers want to shop in local shops – they know it is better for our community – but it just doesn’t fit in with their busy lives. We know creating this site is a BIG undertaking, but we feel it is our duty to do something to help support our local businesses as we face one of our greatest challenges now and in the future.
As we’ve said before: we are going to need your assistance along the way.
One of our greatest concerns in launching this endeavor is the cost of shipping. We know that some corporate retailers offer free shipping as a way to attract customers, they have set somewhat of an expectation that you should not be paying for shipping. Unfortunately, the reality is that shipping always costs something.
Online behemoths like Amazon offer free shipping in order to get you accustomed to it and keep you shopping on their site, and their site only. The fact is Amazon (and other sites) loses billions of dollars every year on shipping costs. They can afford to do this, because they make up some of that money through charging their Amazon Prime fee. The short-term loss is also palatable, as they are forecasting that Amazon will become the number one retailer and data collector in the world, promising huge pay offs in the long run.
As much as LoveLiveLocal would like to be able to offer free shipping, we simply do not have access to the capital that companies like Amazon do (it’s not a level playing field). We are a small business trying to help other small businesses.
For now, we need your help answering a few questions.
