The Cape welcomes its share of headline makers as special guests of local organizations. Calmer Choice, the local non-profit committed to teaching young people how to effectively and safely manage stress, have instead invited headline reporter Dan Harris – a correspondent for the ABC News outlet – to speak at Cape Cod Community College on April 14 as the first in a series of speakers for 2015.
Harris has reported on events such as the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, and has covered various natural disasters from the earthquake in Haiti to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
After suffering an on-air panic attack he also wrote the book 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works–A True Story in 2014. In the book, Harris describes his journey to manage the stress and competitiveness in the television industry with mindfulness practice. Previously a skeptic of the benefits of meditation and mindfulness techniques, Harris will share his story and insight he has gained from various mental health professionals, religious leaders, self-help gurus, and news industry mentors to successfully manage his anxiety.
