A Day in Hyannis

Often referred to as the urban center of the Cape, Hyannis is seen by many as a place to run errands or go see the doctor, but there is also a vibrant downtown that operates year round, as well as a working Harbor that comes alive in the summertime.

Start your day in Hyannis early with a coffee and a crepe at Rendezvous Café, pancakes at the Daily Paper on Main, or farm fresh eggs at Sea Street Café. Then stroll down Main Street for some shopping making sure to stop in Red Fish Blue Fish and Allium for unique gifts and finds, SoHo Arts Company and Cottage Chic for great housewares, and to the far west end where you’ll find one-of-a-kind shops, The Little Beach Gallery and Shift Eco Boutique.

Once you’ve worked up your appetite from walking the almost mile-long street, grab lunch at the newly renovated outdoor bar at Colombo’s for a salad or a wrap, or take something to go from theGreen Lotus Café, which serves vegetarian food but has something for all diet wants, and picnic on Aselton Park. Kids, very large parties and lobster lovers are always welcome at Fresh Ketch.

After lunch, catch a glimpse of the Kennedys life on Cape Cod at The JFK Hyannis Museum, or brush up on the maritime history of the area at Cape Cod Maritime Museum. If you have little one, take them to Wackenhammer’s Clockwork Arcade and Carousel right in the middle of Main Street.

Head from Main Street to the Harbor down the Walkway to the Sea, stopping at the HyArts Art Shanties, where local artists have their goods on display and for sale. Then take a harbor cruise on Hyline Cruises, or catch the sunset on Nantucket Sound on Bay Spirit Tours. After disembarking, have a pre-dinner cocktail and appetizer at the Black Cat or the Shack Out Back. Head back to Main Street for seafood at the Naked Oyster, gourmet pizza at Pizza Barbone, or tapas at Embargo.
After-dinner treats are a-plenty on Main Street: ice cream or frozen yogurt is available at Katie’s(definitely in the running for the best homemade ice cream on the Cape), fudge and chocolate atKandy Korner and a sweet taste of Europe at Café Gelato Bertini.
