A Creative Passion

This month, we are looking at love through the lens of women in creative arts on Cape Cod, who express their passion in a range of media, from theatre to burlesque to singing to visual arts.

Now through March, the Cape Cod Museum of Art features the exhibit Collection in Context: Women Creating, which highlights the “diversity of women artists who have worked, and continue to work, on Cape Cod.” From Early Modernists to Pop artists to those working in contemporary modes, the exhibit offers a glimpse into the artists, their work, and what influenced their creative process.

Founded by Aanjes Hershfield (aka “Pepper Grinds”) of Woods Hole, The Brazen Belles is Cape Cod’s only burlesque troupe.  By drawing inspiration from theatrical, dance, and sketch comedy sources, burlesque cleverly turns stereotypes of women and female sexuality upside down while being accessible, enjoyable and empowering to both women and men. Your next opportunity to experience the Belles’ performance art is at their Valentease show, February 13 and 14 at the Beach House in Falmouth. Whether you are coupled up, looking to have a fun girls’ night out or are completely anti-Cupid, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

In a similarly courageous fashion, Eve Ensler’s award-winning play The Vagina Monologues is a brave and vulnerable look at women’s stories of vulnerability and sexuality. On Sunday February 15, Cotuit Center for the Arts offers a one-night-only stage reading of the play in support of V-Day 2015, an annual global activist movement aimed at ending violence against women and girls. Directed by Aisha Stewart, Anna Botsford and Tara Galvin, all proceeds from the event will go to the Cape Cod Center for Women, a confidential domestic violence shelter providing assistance to individuals and families on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

On February 28, also at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, captivating chanteuse Cerise Bynoe will celebrate some of the greatest women in jazz. This tribute to Cerise’s inspirations, including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughn, will be a passionate and soulful expression of her true love – creating music.
