March 8 is International Women’s Day, which has been observed since in the early 1900s and celebrates women’s achievements as well as calling for greater equality. The organization encourages people to “think globally and act locally” by creating events that are meaningful in their communities.
On Cape Cod, local singer/songwriter Kathleen Healy began the Cape Songbirds Celebration three years ago as a way to do just that. She gathered some of her favorite women musicians to sing their own original songs and cover others by women artists who have inspired them. This year’s concert features seven of the Cape’s favorite musicians This year’s Cape Songbirds are Diana DiGioia, Catie Flynn, Catherine King, Alicia Mathewson, Jordan Renzi and Sarah Swain, as well as Kathleen.
In keeping with the International Women’s Day mission, all proceeds from the $20 tickets will be donated to two extraordinary local charities dedicated to empowering women – WE CAN and Independence House. Join the celebration on March 8 at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm) at Harwich Junior Theatre, and take part in honoring women’s contributions here and around the world.
